Happy Mother's Day

My mother is one of the best people on this planet. She has always loved me. She has always been there for me. She has always set a good example of what it means to be a good mother.

My mama is the kind of mother that puts family first, always. She is the kind of mother who was always there to pick us up from school, do crafts, bake, and sing songs. She is a different mother to each of her daughters because we are different people with different needs. Different but fair. She is the kind of mother who sets an example that every daughter would strive for; selfless and family-oriented yet still maintaining a strong sense of self. She is a “mensch”. She is a person who goes after what she wants, always does her best, and pushes others to do their best. She makes the world a better place.

She is exactly the kind of mother I always wanted to be. Exactly the kind of mother I always thought I would be. One year ago, with a skinny, sleepless, 2-month old baby, I was struggling to be that mother. I had always imagined I would be just like her but over the past year I have come to realize that being exactly the same kind of mother that she has been for me is not possible. Over the past year, with her support and guidance, I have learned how to be my own version of the best mother I can be for my own child.

What a difference one year makes!

This year we did some adorable pre-mother’s day crafts with the 3 cousins (her 3 grandbabies) and made handprint mugs that we will cherish for years to come.

Thank you mama for setting examples for us to strive toward, for making us feel special, for encouraging us to take adventures (and for visiting us along those adventures), for fostering a love of arts, crafts and music, for helping us understand the importance of taking care of ourselves, for mother-daughter dates, for notes in our lunch boxes, and for all of the other ways you have shown your love through the years.

Happy Mother’s Day to my mama and to all of my mama friends! I hope your day is filled with love.
